Oct 13, 2022 · Note: As 0w20 is synthetic oil, try to use 5w30 synthetic engine oil to avoid any kind of issue. Can I use 5w40 instead of 5W-30 for BMW? BMW says you can use an: 0w40, 0w30, 5w30 or a 5w40 LL-1 oil in the USA. Btw… you can also use a LL-4 rated oil where a LL-1 oil is spec’d, but not vice versa!
Nov 27, 2022 · Viscosity Index: The viscosity index is however less in 5w40 than 0w40 oil. That means 0w40 oil’s viscosity changes more than 5w40 under any change of temperatures. Temperature Range: The temperature range of 0w40 is -40°C to +40°C. On the other hand, the temperature range for 5w40 is -35°C to +40°C.

Nov 29, 2011 · That is not true. 76 makes a conventional 0w-20. Honda has both conventional and full synthetic 0w-20 oils available. Honda 0w-20 conventional: 08798-9036 Honda 0w-20 synthetic: 08798-9037. Originally Posted By: Merkava_4. 5W-20 doesn't have near the cold start protection of 0W-20.

Nov 19, 2023 · Probably. If you experience a particularly cold season, your car could really struggle. You might not, especially if the owner’s manual doesn’t recommend using 0W-20 instead. If you decide to use 0W-20 instead of 5W-20 and your car develops problems, you’re most likely to notice them starting as the engine’s warming up.

Mar 22, 2012 · jwb6658. if you want better mileage you want to use 5w-20 or 0w20 for that matter. the last number is the weight of the oil, which in turn will have a thicker viscosity the higher the weight, measured in centistroke. At normal operating temperature a 20 weight might be around 8 cst where as 30 weight may be at 10 cst.
Jun 21, 2016 · There really is no way to know for sure. There is no one size fits all viscosity. Most engines can run on anything from a 0w20 to a 15w50 technically. I would go for a 5w30. You'll find most 20 grades have a HT/HS of 2.6-2.75; Most 5w30's are around 3.0-3.1. bbhero

Nov 11, 2023 · As it remains thin and flows easily, 0w40 will act against engine problems like bearing failure. The 5w40 also has a tremendous low-temperature thickness, though slightly below its companion. For hot weather, the two oils’ viscous values are 40. They become thicker; hence, they offer more protection to the engine parts. Apr 8, 2021 · I wouldn't use 5w20,0w20,0w16,5w30,0w30, 5w40, and 0w40. The ones i wouldn't use is through testing each one using briggs engines with very high rpms adjusted on my pressure washer and push mower, the 5w20 after 20 minutes started burning like CRAZY, the 0w20 started burning at startup and created blue smoke you can see everywhere, 0w16 fouled
Mar 22, 2012 · 2,449. Mar 22, 2012. #2. Yes they are totally interchangeable, the only time I could see it worth going out of your way to find the 0w20 is if you live far far north, otherwise the difference between 0w20 and 5w20 is minimal. Last edited by a moderator: Mar 22, 2012.

In practice, this means that each oil is just as viscous at lower temperatures and will remain viscous at -30°C, however 5w40 oil outperforms 5w30 oils at higher temperatures, being effective up to ambient temperatures of 50°C
Oct 1, 2019 · When I did my oil change, the only oil I had laying around was 5w-30 pennzoil platinum. My 2001 civic with 105k miles calls for 5w-20. Will it cause harm to my engine using the thicker oil? I didn't think so, but read online. Some opinions are that the thicker oil can damage components because the engine wasn't designed for thicker oil.
Apr 21, 2022 · 5w40 is more viscous than 5w30. V5w30 has a viscosity rate of five, while V5w30 has a viscosity rate of thirty. This means that 5w30 has a lower viscosity rate of five, while V5w30 has a higher viscosity rate of thirty. 5w40, on the other hand, has a viscosity rate of 30% and a viscosity rate of 40%.
Jul 25, 2022 · 5w30. 10w30. 15w40. 20w50. These grades above are listed by Toyota as they meet the following required specifications: API grade SL or SM multigrade engine oil. API grade SL “Energy-Conserving”. SM “Energy-Conserving” or ILSAC* multigrade engine oil. API grade SN "Resource Conserving" is an improvement over SM and is backwards compatible.
Dec 8, 2021 · However, you can use 0w30 motor oil in modern engines. Likewise, you can use 5w40 motor oil for the same types of engines in other operating conditions. But before deciding, you should always refer to your owner’s manual. 0w30 vs. 5w40 Subaru. The recommended motor oil for Subaru vehicles is 5w30 synthetic oil and 0w20 synthetic oil.
Most vehicles use multigrade SAE engine oils like 5W30 and 5W40 motor oil. Older vehicles tend to use 10W40, while newer fuel-efficient engines use 0W30 or in the case of hybrid cars 0W20 motor oil! However, we recommend getting your car examined or consulting a car expert to know about the engine oil that your vehicle uses.
Jun 12, 2023 · 0W-30 oil is a type of motor oil that can be used where a 5W-30 or 10W-30 is recommended. It is a synthetic oil that is designed to provide better protection for engines in cold weather conditions. This oil is also said to provide better fuel economy and emissions performance. So, when should you use 0W-30 oil? Can I use 10W 40 instead of 5W-30?

Looks like Mobil-1 0w40 put up the best horsepower numbers which probably means less drag on moving parts so I doubt it will significantly hurt any mileage ratings. Viscosity loss was minimal as well so looks like I'll be using 0w40 Mobil-1.

Apr 27, 2023 · 10w40 oil is an oil weight, or viscosity, that is designed for use in high-performance cars. It is thicker than 5w30 oil at low temperatures, meaning it will flow more slowly. However, at high temperatures it becomes thinner than 5w30 oil, providing better protection for the engine under heavy loads.
